Discover Hunter Green

For over 60 years, Hunter Douglas has been creating and offering natural and appealing ways to harness heat and light. In the winter, heat leaves through the window when you need it, yet becomes trapped inside in the summer when you don't. Heat loss and gain drive our energy usage up. It can be felt in our monthly utility bills and calculated in our collective carbon emissions.

Today, Hunter Douglas is committed to lowering our energy usage and implementing other changes that will ultimately reduce our carbon footprint by 20%. Our overriding goal, though, is to help our customers everywhere save energy the natural way by effectively channeling and exploiting the natural power of the sun.

That's Hunter Green. It reminds us of our unique roots, of who we are today and of where we need to go. And while there are many shades of green in today's world, there is only one Hunter Green.

More specifically, the Hunter Green initiative is a company-wide program designed to promote the superior energy-saving benefits of Hunter Douglas products, create corporate awareness and action around conserving energy across our organization, and support social programs that have a positive impact across the globe through our philanthropic efforts.

Stylish Solutions for Saving Energy at the Window

Consider this: Almost 5% of all energy consumed in the U.S. passes through the windows of residential homes. Looked at another way, as much as 50% of a home's energy is lost through its windows. Hunter Douglas is the worldwide leader in creating innovative, energy-efficient window fashions that can significantly reduce this energy loss, helping you and your family to stay more comfortable, save on heating and cooling costs and contribute to protecting the environment.

Specifically, Hunter Douglas products help conserve energy at the window in three significant ways:

  • Insulation: Our window fashions reduce heat flow (both heat loss and heat gain) through the windows.
  • Solar Heat Control: Our window fashions help to control solar heat (heat generated from the sun) by allowing it into your home in the winter and minimizing the amount that comes in during the summer.
  • Daylighting: Our window fashions enhance daylighting (the use of natural light) by diffusing and dispersing sunlight deep into a room, reducing your need for electrical lighting.

Our most recent innovation, Duette® Architella® honeycomb shades, takes energy conservation to a whole new level. Its patented honeycomb-within-a-honeycomb construction forms three air pockets to dramatically reduce heat flow at the window to save on both energy and heating and cooling costs. In fact, if installed in every window of every American home, Duette Architella shades have the potential to cut the country's annual energy consumption by 2½%. This may not sound like much, but it's the equivalent of a 33% increase in fuel mileage for all passenger cars on U.S. roads — which would save almost 450 million barrels of oil annually and reduce C02 emissions by about 200 million tons.

Corporate

Our Corporate Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

One of the key components of Hunter Green is our facility-directed Environmental Sustainability effort. This endeavor supports our commitment to implementing best "green" practices within our own organization to maximize energy efficiency and waste reduction, and ultimately reduce our carbon footprint.

Guided by the findings from an Environmental Baseline Assessment Audit conducted by DOMANI, an independent sustainability consulting firm, we have implemented an aggressive plan to reduce our energy consumption by 15%, our water usage by 40%, and our overall carbon emissions by 20% within a short three-year period.

Knowing that some of our most innovative thinking comes from our own employees, we have even created a formal competition that engages all Hunter Douglas facilities across North America in the process of improving operating efficiencies, and will formally recognize those that meet established goals with Silver, Gold or Hunter Green status. The competition will rate our facilities on sustainability benchmarks, including:
  • • Energy usage
  • • Waste
  • • Water
  • • Emissions
  • • Fuel Consumption
  • • Alternative Transportation
  • • Building Certifications

Philanthropic

Social Responsibility

Hunter Douglas has long been a leader in social responsibility and charitable giving, with generous support of important initiatives and causes that impact both the communities in which we live and work, as well as those on a more global scale. It has always been our belief that sharing our good fortune to assist those in need is both our corporate responsibility, and also a great privilege. Our reputation for leading the industry in this regard is bolstered by the actions of our employees, many of whom have contributed to the cause with their own financial donations and volunteer work

Our new philanthropic investment fund supports our many charitable activities, including investments in carbon-reducing programs that will help create a cleaner planet and healthier environment. Our support to date includes:

  • Arbor Day Foundation
Our recent financial contribution to The Arbor Day Foundation will aid this grassroots organization's conservation efforts, including replanting trees lost in U.S. fires, and preserving rain forest land. Our investment here is expected to result in the planting of 15,000 new trees and help save over a million square feet of rain forest.
  • Acumen Fund
The Acumen Fund helps to finance affordable critical services - water, health, housing and energy - for billions of people earning less than four dollars a day in other countries. The Acumen Fund activities include studies to clean and recycle contaminated wastewater in developing countries, and backing the commercialization of safe lighting products to replace polluting kerosene lamps.

We will continue to champion a diverse list of respected organizations dedicated to advancing essential causes, including:
Continuation of our 15-year partnership with Habitat for Humanity, whose goal is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. To date, we have donated well over 100,000 window coverings to low-income families, while our employees have invested thousands of hours of "sweat-equity" helping to build hundreds of these homes.

Window covering donations to hospitals and healthcare facilities around the world to create a more comfortable and comforting setting for ailing patients.

Participation in disaster relief efforts that provide critical assistance in times of tragedy. Past examples include the Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, where we contributed more than $1.4 million with the broad support of our employees and fabricator customers.

Financial assistance for educational opportunities for the families of our staff and needy members of our communities.
