Memorial Day Weekend

If you have spent any time researching Window Fashions of Texas or stepped in our showroom, you probably know by now that our beautiful custom wooden shutters are made in America and we are very proud of that fact. We believe in supporting our country and our local economy and appreciate our customers who do the same.

So, since Memorial Day is right around the corner, we thought we’d offer some tips about ways to celebrate. The holiday was instituted as a day to honor those who died in active military. No matter your political views or opinions of our nation, this can be a day to honor those who sacrificed their lives on our behalf.

Backyard BBQ. This is the classic choice. Gather your family, friends, and neighbors and fire up the grill. From hamburgers and hotdogs to barbecuing a lovely brisket to smoking chicken in a smoker for hours, you really can’t get it wrong.

Teach your children the meaning. Many of us get caught up in Memorial Day being the first holiday of summertime (even though kids are still in school!). But it does have a meaning, so why not take the opportunity to teach your children what it is? There are so many resources online, like this Scavenger Hunt.

Do something to show honor. Perhaps you could visit a local Veteran’s cemetery. You could also bake cookies and deliver them to a Veteran’s hospital. Find someone there to sit and talk to about their experiences.

Learn (or re-learn) the history of one of our nation’s wars. You can do this in many ways like reading online historical accounts or find books at the local library. You might even find an historical reenactment or perhaps a Hollywood movie depicting the story of one particular soldier or company.

Get creative with a craft project. Search online for Memorial Day coloring pages, quizzes, word searches, craft projects and more.

Reach out to a soldier. Create a card or picture to mail overseas. Or put together a whole goodie box. Not sure what to include, check out AnySoldier.com for help on what to send, where to send it, etc.
